Fast Food - In Search of the Lancaster Perch Roll
We've been hearing stories about something called a Perch Roll, apparently a local fast food delicacy in the town of Lancaster, Ontario. All anyone needs to do is tell us about a dish indigenous to a region and (pardon the pun) our appetite for discovery is fully whetted. Is there still such a thing as a Lancaster Perch Roll? Does it deserve its reputation? The Canadian Roadflix crew headed for the Eastern Ontario town to find out. Any excuse for a roadtrip! Traditionally yellow perch fillets were fried, cradled in a hot dog bun, smothered in onions, and topped with a "secret" sauce. Each restaurant guarded their specific sauce recipe and the competition among restaurants and road-side stands along highway 2 for the "best" perch roll was fierce.
We found that between declining fish stocks, government regulations and the departure of some of the old-time roadside fast food emporiums finding a Lancaster Perch Roll worthy of the local accolades was not easy. But we persevered!
