Sandland - An Awesome - and Very Ephemeral - P.E.I. Art Gallery

Prince Edward Island, with miles and miles of red sand beaches has seen more than its share of sandcastles and sand sculptures rise at the hand of vacationers and fall on the whim of tide and wind. But when the city of Charlottetown hired 8 artists to create an art gallery using only sand and water the medium moved beyond the domain of family beach project. Sandland, on the edge of the city's historic waterfront is collection of ephemeral sculptures that are well worth a visit. We talked with Ben Waterman, an award winning sculpture (he habitually works with ice and claims sand is a much friendlier substance) in his own right, who maintains the exhibit and gives sand sculpting lessons. He and Tracy Stretch from Tourism Charlottetown gave us a tour of lobster fishermen, fiddlers, pipers , politicians and Ann of Green Gables – all made of R.E.I.'s distinctive red sand.
